The Electromagnetic Launch Technology Symposium (EML)

The Electromagnetic Launch TechnologySymposium (EML) is a biennial event that serves as the principal forum for thediscussion, interchange, and presentation of research on critical technologiesfor accelerating macroscopic objects or projectiles to hypervelocities usingelectromagnetic or electrothermochemical launchers. The EML symposia have along-standing international reputation as a catalyst for stimulating researchin the field of electromagnetic launch. In May 1998, the U.S. EML and theEuropean EML announced their decision to consolidate their symposia. In May2012, the International Permanent Committee welcomed China as a permanentmember of the International EML Technology Symposia. The 18th EML will be the3rd in the series under this new structure.

During the Symposium, researchers share andexchange a wealth of knowledge through oral and poster presentations. We are atthe threshold of a new era in the applications of electromagnetic launchtechnology. Significant developments in hypervelocity electromagnetic launchand in hypervelocity high-G guidance and control components have provided theimpetus for exploring advanced electromagnetic launchers capable of providingrevolutionary new capabilities. The ability to use electromagnetic energy tocontrollably propel objects to extremely high speeds has broad and importantconsequences for many elements of our society, including transportation,communications, energy, national defense, and space. The technology for usingelectromagnetic energy pulses to accelerate materials to extremely high speedsis only now sufficiently advanced that it is being exploited to evaluate thesurvivability of space structures and the survivability and lethality ofmilitary weapons systems. Electromagnetic launchers are now capable ofaccelerating objects to such high speeds that projectiles are capable oftraveling many hundreds of kilometers or penetrating the most advance modernarmors, and there is a renewed and growing interest in using electromagneticlaunchers to reach sufficiently high speeds to put objects in orbit around theearth.

电磁发射技术研讨会(EML)是一个两年一届的活动,是一个使用电磁或电热化学发射器加速宏观物体或射弹到超视距的关键技术的研究,交流和演示的主要论坛。EML专题研讨会在电磁发射领域具有长久的国际声誉,成为刺激研究的催化剂。1998年5月,美国EML和欧洲EML公布他们决定巩固他们的研讨会。2012年5月,国际常务委员会欢迎中国担任国际EML技术研讨会常任理事国。在研讨会期间,研究人员通过口头和海报演示分享和交流丰富的知识。我们正处于电磁发射技术应用的新时代的门槛。超高速电磁发射和超高速高G指导和控制组件的重大发展为探索能够提供革命性新功能的先进电磁发射器提供了动力。使用电磁能量可控地推动物体达到极高速度的能力对我们社会的许多要素(包括运输,通讯,能源,国防和空间)具有广泛和重要的影响。
